«177 songs by Maher Shalal Hash Baz», così sta scritto in bella mostra nel nuovo doppio CD del gruppo giapponese. In realtà di canzoni più o meno tradizionalmente intese ce ne sono ben poche, giusto 7 nel primo CD (Touring, Job, Machinations In Your Days, Sayonara, Je..., The Button Picked Up In The Moonlight e Donne-Moi A Boire) e 3 nel secondo (Memorial, More Errors e Bread Of Distress, Water Of Oppression). I restanti brani sono briciole di primitivismo ayleriano, mondati però dalla forza distruttiva e dal pathos tipici del sassofonista neroamericano (e non scommetterei certo la scottatura di una mano andando a giurare che i vecchi dischi del gruppo non contengano affatto qualcuno di questi motivi, proprio alla maniera del vecchio Ayler che rivisitava a ciclo continuo le sue Bells, Ghosts e Spirits). Si tratta di brevi frammenti, di temi accennati, di variazioni che, spesso, muoiono sul nascere. Ma qui non c`è l`urgenza alla velocità del brucia tutto e subito tipica di grindcorer come gli Shore Throat (che misero ben 99 pezzi in una facciata di LP) e non c`è neppure il tentativo di concentrare e sintetizzare tipico del free-core targato Melt Banana, e Tori Kudo sembra essere più prossimo ai `pezzi di un secondo` dei Red Crayola, cioè all`idea di accendere solo la scintilla dalla quale un pezzo dovrebbe nascere e svilupparsi, anche se nel suo caso si tratta di scintillone che vanno ben oltre un misero secondo (il primo pezzo dura ben sette secondi e Tall Bookshelf ne dura quattro, per fare due esempi, ma altrove si superano, anche di gran lunga, questi minimi input). Redcrayoliche sono comunque sia l`atmosfera generale sia il mood dei singoli pezzi che, nelle canzoni in particolare, va a tingersi anche di malata poesia barrettiana (quante volte ancora dovrò citare il nome dello scomparso ex Pink Floyd?), ovvero si pone su quella linea immaginaria tracciata da quei grandi spiriti del pop capaci di cavare una melodia anche dalle rape (penso a John Lennon, penso a Julian Cope...). Ma le mie sono chiaramente supposizioni, chè è davvero difficile entrare nella testa del giapponese e capire cosa lo ha spinto a realizzare questo disco, vista anche la povertà di informazioni elargite che si limitano a un «These 177 songs, composed between 2005-2007 were recorded the 11-16 June 2007 at Studio Chaudelande, St-Pierre Eglise, France by Manuel Pasdeloup & Teruki Tamayanagi and mixed & mastered by Hiromits Shoji (Sara Disc). The cover was designed by McCloud Zicmuse», nulla sui musicisti coinvolti (nel sito della K Records sta scritto: «For the recordings, Kudo assembled six musicians from Japan and bunkered down for six days in St. Pierre-Eglise») e/o sugli strumenti utilizzati! Sicuramente questi frammenti non vanno intesi come brandelli di un unico insieme o come scampoli da rimontare casualmente, chè questo non è il `sergent pepper` e un fatidico countdown di 10 secondi sta quasi sempre a distingure in modo netto un brano dall`altro. Magari si tratta semplicemente di un esperimento di free-karaoke... Tori Kudo vi dà le musiche e voi ci cantate su dei testi! O magari si tratta di una solenne presa per il culo, e visto che quell`altro burlone che si fa chiamare Le Ton Mitè ha firmato il disegno di copertina ci può stare anche questo, ma a me l`ascolto di questi CD fa semplicemente l'effetto di un bicchiere d`acqua fresca quando ho sete. Se la trovate a prezzo abbordabile vi consiglio di acquistare la versione giapponese che contiene un terzo CD con ben 60 `outtakes`.
